In the beginning it seems like any other book about a girl who feels she doesn't fit in at school. It gets very interesting after that. She is a real fan of anything to do with Antarctica, including the real person "Titus Oates" who died while exploring Antarctica in the 1900s. In fact, she "hears" Titus speak to her pretty regularly. On what appears to be the trip of a lifetime to Antarctica, with her Uncle, things go from a vacation to a bizarre situation very quickly. Read this book....I couldn't wait to get back to it when I had to stop reading. This book blog is a place where the students of the Middle School of the Kennebunks can post a great book that they've read that others might also enjoy. To start us off, here is a book I've read that I liked a lot. I look forward to reading your comments! Mrs. Savage, Media Specialist, Middle School of the Kennebunks.

Book Title: Diamonds in the Shadow
Author: Caroline B. Cooney

I've often wondered what it would be like to have to leave your home because of a war and have to start over somewhere else. In this book, Jared is a middle school student whose church-going parents decide to take in a refugee family from Africa. Jared is not pleased about the disruption to his life at all. The refugees arrive to live with his family but before long Jared starts to notice things and feel that something is wrong, that they are not who they say they are. Jared is right. The suspense in this book is great, all the way up to the exciting ending. This is by the same author of The Face on the Milk Carton.
